Man dies in train versus pedestrian accident in Scottsbluff

Authorities say a 29 year old man was hit and killed in a train versus pedestrian accident early Monday morning.

According to a release from Scottsbluff Police, David Sound Sleeper of Scottsbluff was found dead at the Broadway BNSF crossing when officers arrived at the scene shortly before 1:30 a.m.

Officials say the investigation found that Sound Sleeper was south bound of foot when he was struck by an east bound BNSF train. Police had been initially dispatched to a vehicle versus train collision but determined no vehicle was involved.

The railroad crossings of W. 20th, Broadway, and 5th Ave were closed for approximately 2.5 hours while the investigation was completed.  The investigation found that the train crossing arms and audible horns were functioning properly at the time of the incident.

Scottsbluff Fire and Valley Ambulance also responded to the scene.
