For Scottsbluff High School Junior Gavin Howell, WNCC’s Criminal Justice Career Day on Wednesday was a great opportunity to meet with professionals who work in the field.

“I wanted to see what (criminal justice) was like and get to know the people in our community,” said Howell.
Howell certainly met a fair share of the criminal justice professionals around the community Wednesday.
Presenting at the Western Nebraska Community College Criminal Justice Career Day were representatives from the Nebraska State Patrol, the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Scotts Bluff County Detention Center, Scotts Bluff County probation office, Scottsbluff Police Department, and the DOVES Program.
Throughout the day, high school students from around the Panhandle sat in on informational sessions from each of the representatives in attendance.
Students witnessed an officer training simulation for an active shooter situation, were taught how officers install handcuffs, and had the chance to dust for fingerprints.
They also learned how investigative officers inspect a scene, how lie detector tests are analyzed, and how detention center procedures are implemented.
“It gave me huge insight on what these jobs actually are,” Howell said. “You get to see for real what happens with these jobs, so that’s really interesting.”
