(AUDIO) Local students to attend Leadership Conference at UNL in June
Stinson and Vering

GACC Student Greta Vering and West Point-Beemer Student Jasmine Stinson have both qualified for the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State, Patriotism and Leadership Conference to be held in Lincoln in June. Vering talks about how the two qualified while Stinson previews the conference.

Vering says the two will also get to tour the State Capitol while in Lincoln.

The conference will take place June 2nd through the 8th at UNL.

Vering and Stinson both talk about what they hope to learn at the conference.

Vering says only one girl is selected from each junior class so it’s an honor to be chosen.

She does basketball, track, choir, and one act for GACC while Stinson participates in softball, track, National Honor Society, Journalism, and Yearbook for WPB.

All attendees, known as “citizens” receive special instruction in parliamentary procedure and organize themselves into two mock political parties. The women then campaign, hold rallies, debate, and ultimately vote to elect city, county, and state officials. Once elected to office, delegates are sworn in and perform their prescribed duties. Those not elected to office are given appointments and visit the offices of those elected to share their viewpoints as citizens.
