(AUDIO) NBC Elementary Teacher Streff earns Milken Educator Award

North Bend Central Elementary School Teacher Rebecca Streff earned a $25,000 Milken Educator Award earlier this week. Streff says she is very honored to receive the award. “I’m actually very humbled to receive it. I feel like there are many educators within my own school district that could of easily also earned the award. I’m very humbled by this opportunity that I have been able to earn from the award.”

Streff says she feels the award shows the dedication and time commitment and love and passion that teachers have for their students.

She was presented the award during an assembly at the school. “It was a complete surprise. I had no idea what was happening at all. It was a secret. The only people who knew was the Milken Award people and my Administration. And so it was a complete secret. They kept on saying it’s a teacher in the crowd, so I kept thinking of all the great teachers within the Elementary that it could be. I’m like surely it’s one of them, oh it could be that person too, it could be that person. So when they said my name I was in complete shock.”

Streff has been a teacher at North Bend Central for 11 years. Her husband Ken is a Social Studies Teacher at the high school is also the Head Wrestling Coach.

Streff explains what the Milken award is. “So it’s just to bring the heart of nearly every living thing that is valued to individuals. They want to honor teachers who are helping students reach their full potential. They are wanting to award it to teachers who are kind of in the middle to beginning stages of their educational career as teachers so that the next stages they can continue to develop their best practices as well as educate students so that it’s a continuing thing.”

Streff says she’s going to do some research on the best use of the money before deciding what to do with it.
