Recovery from a powerful blizzard Friday night into Saturday continues. One death was confirmed in a crash involving two semi-trailer trucks in the median of I-80 near mile marker 84 according to the Nebraska State Patrol. 61 year old Rollo Ward of Idaho Falls, Idaho was pronounced dead at the scene after the semi he was driving lost control, entered the median and struck a semi that had previously becoming stranded.
Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) located a portable tower for Region 26 after its dispatch tower was toppled due to 60 mph winds. Blaine, Garfield, Greeley, Loup, Sherman, Thomas, Valley, and Wheeler counties make up Region 26 and are affected by the loss. The tower, located north of Ord gave way in the face of heavy ice buildup and high winds. The portable tower will be put to use until a new tower is built.
Road closures, including Interstate 80 and U.S. Highways 30 and 20, affected travelers and sent them to shelters. Big Springs and Sidney opened shelters. Late Saturday, Nebraska Department of Roads District 6 in North Platte had opened all roads except Nebraska Highway 92 from Arnold to Merna.
