Centennial remains undefeated with narrow win over BRLD

Utica- Centennial High School football team remains undefeated and narrowing winning over BRLD (Bancroft-Rosalie-Lyons-Decatur) Friday night.

A game that went like advertised, tight, evenly matched all night long.

The story of the game for Centennial was turnovers. Usually not an issue for the Broncos, but Friday night, they gave up the ball four times.

 For BRLD, their summary was penalties, they had ten flags thrown on them.

 Coming into the game, both team were known to pack a lot of offense , but at the end of the 1st quarter, it was tied  7-0 . BRLD scored on a 55 yard TD run by quarterback Will Gatzmeyer.

Centennial got on the board on a seven-yard run by quarterback Wyatt Ehlers.

Second quarter BRLD took the lead 13-7 on a six-yard run by Gatzmeyer again, and they made the extra point.

That remained the scored at halftime.

 Second half Centennial came out and scored on seven plays on a 46-yard run by Caleb Horne who broke a couple tackles and found a seam for the 6. Extra point was good and Centennial took the lead back 14-13.

 Horne scored again in the third quarter on a 4-yard TD.

In the fourth quarter, BRLD scored on a 4th down and 24 yards to go. Gatzmeyer toss a bullet to Lucas Vogt for a 79-yard TD play.

Centennial countered with a TD of their own on a throw off balanced throw from Ehlers to Jackson Hirschfeld in the corner of the end for 6 points. Hirschfeld had to make an amazing catch to reel it in. the

With less than three minutes left in the game, Centennial was on the four-yard line, and threw an interception.

BRLD wasn’t laying down. They came back to regain the lead on a 41-yard pass from Gatzmeyer to Vogt. The PAT. Was good, and BRLD had a 28-27 lead with 2:33 left in regulation.

Centennial missed an earlier PAT that is why they were behind by one.

BRLD had a couple of penalties to give the Broncos good field position. And with that opportunity Centennial capitalized with a four-yard run by Horne once again.

BRLD tried a couple plays including a hail-mary pass with less than 30 seconds on the clock,  but couldn’t score and Centennial won 33-28.

 Centennial will move on to the third round of the class C-2 play-offs and host Oakland-Craig, another undefeated team Friday night.

 BRLD season comes to an end at 8-3.
