Chromebooks Initiative, new curriculum planned next year for Scottsbluff students

Chromebooks Initiative, new curriculum planned next year for Scottsbluff students

The Scottsbuff Public School System will continue to embrace technology next fall by providing more than 1,800 chromebooks to students in sixth through twelfth grades along with curriculum changes in the math and English learning areas.

Curriculum Director Mike Mason says Internet usage on the chromebook will be filtered at all times, and each student will be responsible for the care of the chromebook at school and when they take it home.

Mason says the chromebooks support the new curriculum in the Middle School and help students take the next step in their learning.

Mason said, “that student engagement is such an important piece and how do we help students with research and different things that is really limited with a pencil and paper. we really think it will help.”

The chromebooks will be checked out like a textbook with students returning them at the end of the year.

A new Middle School digital math curriculum, “Illustrative Math” , is designed to smoothly move students directly from their elementary school math to a problem and critical thinking based program enhanced by apps that make it more engaging. There will also be a new English Language Arts program, “Wit and Wisdom”, for grades three through eight designed to enhance reading and writing skills plus improve oral communication.
