Local residents are being trained today (Wednesday) by an officer with the Nebraska State Patrol on how they can take steps to increase their safety in active killer situations that have become the norm around the country.

NSP Sergeant Chris Baer says the training has three basic tenets….. avoid, deny and defend.

Baer says be aware of your environment and try to avoid  such situations, deny access with added security at your homes, businesses and schools to such threats and in the last scenario ways to defend from being a victim in such situations.

Baer says every situation can be different and they can happen in schools, businesses, or just in the course of everyday living.

Also included in the training at the Hampton Inn is a slide and hands on presentation by Regional West Trauma Program Manager Susan Wilson on how to stop life threatening bleeding through direct pressure, packing the wound or putting tourniquets on.
