County considering hiring separate transit manager for planned fixed route bus service

Scotts Bluff County’s Director of Operations is recommending that the county hire a separate transit manager to handle the planned fixed route bus system that will replace the Handi-Bus later this year.

Carol Prince, who is currently handling county facilities and the Handi-Bus system, says someone will need to be hired to simply handle the fixed route system and do such things as train and hire employees, plus coordinate drug testing. The commissioners say they will consider Prince’s request while still trying to keep spending down in what will likely be another tough budget year.

Prince says a committee will also need to be formed to help determine exactly where all the stops will be on the fixed route that will circle Scottsbluff and Gering. And she says a contest to name the service will begin May 22nd and run for approximately three weeks.

A $274,500 grant to pay for the service was approved by the Board Monday, with the county’s share of the funding around $67,000.
