Lots of classes are planned next month at Northeast Community College’s Campuses in West Point and Norfolk. Class information can be found below:

 

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer another Heart Code – BLS for Healthcare Provider Online & Skills Session course, beginning soon.

The first portion of this course (HLTH 5300/19S & CRN #70238) is web-based and is available on-line
24 hours a day. The skills session meets Saturday, March 9, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m., in Room 101 of the Arlo Wirth Building on the Norfolk campus.

The Basic Life Support course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking. This course is designed for the first time or renewal certification and has two parts for completion.

Part 1 provides a flexible alternative to classroom training. Part 2 is a skills session where hands on practice and competency testing are completed with a Certified AHA Instructor. When online Part 1 is completed, students will register for the Skills Sessions. Participants are to bring their online completion certificate (Part 1 completed within the last 60 days) to the Skills Session for which they have registered.

Online key codes for Part 1 are available at the Hawks Shop in the Student Center on the Norfolk campus, (402) 844-7140. NOTE: Participants need to bring their AHA Part 1 Health Care Provider Online Course Completion Certificate to be admitted to the Skills Session. No textbook is required for this class.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer additional Heart Code – Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid On-line Skills Sessions.

Three testing sessions – Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid (HLTH 5130/19S & CRN #70278); Heartsaver CPR/AED – Adult, Infant and Child (HLTH 5150/19S & CRN #70279); Heartsaver First Aid (HLTH 5105/18S & CRN #70277) will be held Saturday, March 9, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101, on the Norfolk campus.

The Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid course CPR/AED (testing sessions will cover any of the combinations as listed above) – teaching rescuers to recognize and treat cardiac arrest and choking for adults, children and infant victims, use an AED and First Aid – teaching management of certain environmental reactions; allergic reactions, cuts, wounds, bites, and various situations requiring treatments.

The on-line course is designed for the first time or renewal certification. This course is accessible 24 hours a day and provides a flexible alternative to classroom training for the course itself. After completing this course, students are eligible to register for the testing session. NORFOLK – Northeast Community College will offer courses next month on indoor plant care and alternative horticulture.

Interior Plant Care (HORT 1991/19S & CRN #24193) is a one-credit class that will be held online from March 11-May 8. The class will also meet two Saturdays, March 30 and May 4, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in Room 145 of the Ag/Allied Health Building on Northeast’s Norfolk campus.

This course is designed to teach basic interior plant identification, diagnosis and care for office or home plants. The focus will be on environmental and biological issues that affect indoor plants. Hands-on approaches to pruning, propagating and transplanting will also be practiced.

Alternative Horticulture (HORT 1992/19S & CRN #24194) is a one-credit class that will meet online from March 11-May 8.

This course focuses on new and innovative ways to produce traditional horticulture crops. Participants will look at existing methods of creative production and the challenges each of these may encounter. An emphasis will also be placed on understanding how production demand follows cultural needs.

NORFOLK – The Business and Technology Division at Northeast Community College has added several one-credit technology classes to its upcoming schedule.

Microsoft Excel 2016 (OFFT 1520/19S & CRN #24147) will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 11-May 8, from 11 a.m.-12 p.m. in Room 126 of the Maclay Building on Northeast’s Norfolk campus.

In this class, students will be introduced to using a Microsoft Excel worksheet for decision making and mathematical calculations. Tom Wiese is the instructor.

Microsoft Access 2016 – Online (OFFT 1530/19S & CRN #23517) will be held March 11-May 8, online.

Participants will learn to effectively operate the database portion of the Microsoft Office suite. Kris Coan is the instructor.

In this course, participants will learn to create, edit and present a slide presentation with text, bullets, clipart, pictures and animations. Kris Coan is the instructor for the course.

Participants will learn the basics of Hyper-Text Markup Language (HTML) as they plan, design and create an internet web page. Kirk Christian is the instructor for the class.

NORFOLK – The Applied Technology Division at Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a hands-on course in Small Engine, Motorcycle, All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Maintenance and Repair beginning soon.

The two-credit course (DESL 1990/19S & CRN #21336) will be held Mondays, March 11-May 8, from 5:30 – 8:45 p.m., in the Diesel Technology building, Room 103.

In this course, students will learn how to save money by making their own repairs to ATVs, motorcycles, lawn mowers, chain saws, snow blowers and other small engines. They will develop the skills needed to inspect, test, repair and maintain nearly anything with a small engine. The class, which is suitable for beginning and advanced students, includes lab time to work on hands-on projects.

Advanced Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) TIG (WELD 1994/19S & CRN #23761) will meet Wednesdays, March 11-May 8, from 6-9 p.m. in Room 101 of the Weller Building.

This lecture/lab course is designed to teach students about arc welding safety and Gas Tungsten Arc (GTAW-TIG) welding processes and power techniques for welding. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to perform general entry level production and maintenance welding on mild steel, stainless steel and aluminum thin gage material. The course does not include thick plate, pipe or other structural shapes.

Supplies needed include a helmet, welding cap, clear safety glasses, pliers, diagonal cutting pliers, welding coat, TIG gloves and a stainless steel wire brush.

Vern Hood is the instructor. Cost of the class is $232.

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) Stick (WELD 1994/19S & CRN #24181) will meet on the same dates and times in the same location.

This lecture/lab course provides students with a technical understanding of arc welding, welding safety, power sources, electrode classification and selection. Welding will be done in all positions on mild steel carbon material, single and multiple pass, using mild steel, low hydrogen and iron power electrodes, with DC current. Depending on ability of the student, groove welds may also be performed as time permits. The course also provides an understanding of oxyacetylene cutting as well as safety practices in cutting.

Supplies needed are a helmet, welding cap, clear safety glasses, pliers, welding coat or leathers, cutting goggles and SMAW gloves. Chipping hammers and wire brushes are optional.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer a beginner-level class on conversational Spanish, beginning soon.

Conversational Spanish (SPAN 5100/19S & CRN #70207) will meet three consecutive Mondays, March 11-25, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Room 104 of the West Point Technical Center, 200 W. Washington St.

This course will be especially beneficial to those in the business community who have not had previous or much exposure to the Spanish language. The class will focus on helping beginning learners develop basic vocabulary and effective pronunciation skills. The course also focuses on practical, real-world language with an emphasis on oral communication.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer a new class soon on Natural Remedies for Cold and Flu Season.

The class (HOEC 5160/19S & CRN #70071) will meet Monday, March 11, from 7-9 p.m. at the West Point Technical Center, 200 W. Washington St., in Room 102.

In this class, participants will learn simple methods of strengthening the immune system as well as remedies for common winter ailments using homemade herbal elixirs, infusions, decoctions, poultices, compresses, steams, honeys, tinctures and salves. Many recipes and samples will be provided.

WEST POINT -Two Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) courses for general industry will be offered at Northeast Community College in West Point in March.

OSHA10-Hour For General Industry (SAFT 5115/19S & CRN #70145) will meet Tuesday, March 12, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Wednesday, March 13, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in Room 102 of the West Point Technical Center, 200 W. Washington St.

This training course introduces participants to the OSHA standards that govern general industry, explains how to read and use the Code of Federal Regulations (CFRs) and provides an overview of compliance programs and procedures that are required for the workplace. WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer two QuickBooks classes next month.

QuickBooks – Level I (ACCT 5100/19S & CRN #70073) will meet Tuesday, March 12, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Northeast Community College in West Point, 202 Anna Stalp Ave., in Room 212.

This course covers the basics of setting up a company, creating customers, receiving payments and making deposits into bank accounts. Students will work with and create vendors and paying bills. They will also create and edit a chart of accounts for a company, run reports and reconcile bank accounts.

QuickBooks – Level II (ACCT 5300/19S & CRN #70078) will be held Tuesday, March 19, October 23, from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. in the same location.

This course covers creating inventory, dealing with items and adjusting inventory counts on a continual basis. Students will learn about sales tax and sales tax groups, paying sales tax, running payroll and paying payroll liabilities. They will also create capital assets, utilize the loan manager and create an amortization schedule. Dealing with bad debt and creating journal entries will also be covered.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will hold another Nurse Aide course beginning next month.

The course (NURA 1110/19S & CRN #24574) will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4:30-9:30 p.m. in Room 115 of the Arlo Wirth Building on the Norfolk campus. Genevra Blackburn is the instructor.

This three-credit course is designed to meet the Nebraska Health and Human Services System training requirements for nurse aide certification and employment in long-term care facilities. The class combines classroom lecture and laboratory application for the development of basic skills needed to provide safe, effective, and caring services to the elderly or chronically ill patient of any age in a long-term care facility.

Upon completion of this course, the student is eligible to take the state written and practical skills exam. After successfully passing this examination and completing the application procedure, the student’s name will be placed on the basic nurse aide registry at the Nebraska Health and Human Services Regulation and Licensure, Credentialing Division.

In this course, participants will learn the essentials of Microsoft Word and word processing. WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer an introductory course on watercolor painting, beginning soon.

Watercolor for Beginners (ARTS 5163/19S & CRN #70072) will be held Tuesday, March 12, from 6-9 p.m. in Room 102 of the West Point Technical Center, at 200 W. Washington St.

In this course, participants will discover basic watercolor techniques that many artists use. They will begin class by learning about the difference in brushes and paper; how to blend color and play with brush strokes; water-to-paint ratio; and incorporating unexpected items to create fun and interesting effects. The last half of the class will be devoted to applying these techniques to create a finished piece of art.

Intermediate Watercolor (ARTS 5163/19S & CRN #70088) will be held Thursday, April 11, from 6-9 p.m. in the same location.

This class will focus on composing beautiful illustrations. Best for those with basic experience in watercolor techniques, the class will cover brush stroke and color blending and how to add details that take a work to the next level. The second half of the class will be devoted to applying these techniques to create a finished illustration.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer another one credit course in electrical licensing in March.

Electrical Licensing I (ELTR 2015/18S & CRN #23474) will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 12-21, from 6:30-10 p.m. in the Applied Technology building, Room 115.

In this class, Instructor Dan Frohberg will cover a minimum of eight hours on code with the additional eight hours on related topics. These classes, tailored to fit needs and requirements, will also cover the changes in the National Electrical Code and Calculations. They are also used for education hours needed for licensing.

Students will learn about sales tax and sales tax groups, paying sales tax, running payroll and paying payroll liabilities. They will create capital assets and loan accounts and also discuss dealing with bad debt.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer a series of classes on digital photography during March and April.

Getting to Know Your Camera (ARTS 5100/19S & CRN #70075) will be held Thursday, March 14, from 6-8 p.m., in Room 212 of the West Point extended campus, 202 Anna Stalp Avenue.

In this beginning-level class, participants will become familiar with the various buttons and dials on their cameras and what they mean. They will learn to change from one mode to the next, how to re-format a memory card, change pictures quality and more.

Cost is $20.

Digital Photography I (ARTS 5105/18F & CRN #60188) will be held Thursday, March 21, from 6-9 p.m. in the same location.

In this beginning course, participants will learn the basics of their digital cameras. They will learn the different controls and modes the camera has to offer as well as how to compose a good image. Different brands of cameras as well as various lens options will also be discussed. This class is the first step to moving from auto mode to full manual.

Cost is #30.

Digital Photography II (ARTS 5305/18F & CRN #60189) will be held Thursday, March 28, from 6-9 p.m. in the same location.

During this class, participants will build on what they learned in week one by becoming familiar with other photography gear like memory cards and batteries. They will also learn about additional items, such as umbrellas, flashes, soft boxes and other gear.

Cost is $30.

Digital Photography III (ARTS 5500/18F & CRN #60190) will be held Thursday, April 4, from 6-9 p.m. in the same location.

In this final part of the series, participants will take what they’ve learned about ISO, aperture and shutter speed and move into full manual mode. They will practice what they have learned during a real photo shoot as the instructor guides them as they learn how to compose a good shot, work with lighting and take great photos in full manual mode.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer an introductory course on watercolor painting, beginning soon.

Watercolor for Beginners (ARTS 5163/19S & CRN #70072) will be held Tuesday, March 12, from 6-9 p.m. in Room 102 of the West Point Technical Center, at 200 W. Washington St.

In this course, participants will discover basic watercolor techniques that many artists use. They will begin class by learning about the difference in brushes and paper; how to blend color and play with brush strokes; water-to-paint ratio; and incorporating unexpected items to create fun and interesting effects. The last half of the class will be devoted to applying these techniques to create a finished piece of art.

Intermediate Watercolor (ARTS 5163/19S & CRN #70088) will be held Thursday, April 11, from 6-9 p.m. in the same location.

This class will focus on composing beautiful illustrations. Best for those with basic experience in watercolor techniques, the class will cover brush stroke and color blending and how to add details that take a work to the next level. The second half of the class will be devoted to applying these techniques to create a finished illustration.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will be the site of a Computerized Numerical Control – CNC Operator class that begins in mid-March.

The class (INDT 1990/19S & CRN #24588) will meet Thursdays, March 14-May 2, from 6-9 p.m. in the Applied Technology building, Room 117. Steve Wagner is the instructor of the two-credit-hour class with a cost of $232.

This eight-week course will present students with basic skills in reading and application of G&M code programming, setup procedures and safe operation of Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) lathes and mills. Electronic part probing and tool probing will be practiced. Applications will be presented in two, three and four axis machining using a variety of drills and cutters. They will experience making tool offsets, using cutter compensation, performing circular interpolation and thread milling program routines.

Students are asked to bring their own safety glasses, paper, pencils and calculator.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer two Basic Life Support (BLS) courses for healthcare providers in March.

BLS for Healthcare Provider Course (HLTH 5300/19S & CRN #70239) will be held Saturday, March 16, from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. in Room 105 of the Arlo Wirth Building on the Norfolk campus.

This course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize a number of life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. A BLS for Healthcare Providers course certification card will be issued upon successful completion.

BLS for Healthcare Provider Renewal (HLTH 5305/19S & CRN #70107) will be held Wednesday, March 13, from 6-10 p.m. in Room 101 of the Arlo Worth Building.

Designed for a wide variety of healthcare professionals, this course is designed to refresh skills related to recognizing several life-threatening emergencies, providing CPR, using an AED and relieving choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. Participants are asked to bring their current certification card to the class.
