North Platte NRD awarded $31K from Nebraska Environmental Trust

The North Platte Natural Resources District Geothermal Greenhouse was awarded $31,883 from the Nebraska Environmental Trust on Tuesday, April 10.

“This is going to be amazing for the greenhouse project,” said Jenifer Berge Sauter, an intern at the NPNRD. “Enabling us to continue our work on this sustainable project.”

While the greenhouse is still a shell, it is getting closer and closer to being done every day. The greenhouse will include a variety of citrus trees and vegetables.

“Our citrus trees came in last week and are patiently waiting in our front office to be planted,” she said. “We’ll have Tango Mandarin, Eureka Lemon, Washington Navel Orange and of course, vegetables, which are also growing in my office.”

The produce grown at the greenhouse will be donated to the Veterans Home and other groups that combat hunger such as CAPWN and the counties they serve, and the Weekend Food Backpack Program.

“Geothermal greenhouses use less water and energy than those traditionally above ground, and we feel it is a perfect way to teach conservation,” said Barb Cross, assistant manager at the North Platte NRD. “All produce will be weighed to determine the value of crops grown. This will encourage and be a starting point for new farming Ideas.”

The outdoor educational facility which includes the geothermal greenhouse will also have 70 plots of native and introduced grasses, a learning/classroom area, tree identification plantings, and a native grass area.

“The Trust is very excited about the opportunities this greenhouse will provide to the people in the North Platte Natural Resources District, especially the students.” said Mark Brohman, executive director of the Nebraska Environmental Trust.
