Northeast to hold classes at West Point and Norfolk Campuses in February

Northeast Community College will hold classes at its West Point and Norfolk Campuses in February. Class information can be found below:

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a non-credit class later this month to equip 14-17-year-olds with the basic skills to operate a motor vehicle.

The Provisional Operator’s Permit (P.O.P.) Driver’s Education Course (TRAN 5110/19S & CRN #70027/70028) will be held Saturday, February 2, from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; Sunday, February 3 and 10, from 1-6 p.m.; and Saturday, February 9, from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. The class, with Dan Loofe the instructor, will meet in Room 118 of the Utility Line Building, which is east of Northeast’s Norfolk campus on Benjamin Avenue.

The class includes 20 hours of classroom lecture. The required driving lab hours will be arranged between the instructor and the student.

Students are asked to bring their learner’s or school driving permit to the first class. A book will be provided. Students must sign up for both the lecture class and the driving sessions. A parent or guardian is asked to attend the first part of the first class along with the student.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer a class soon to prepare educators for the Praxis Core Academic Skills test.

Praxis Core Writing Preparation (ENGL 5115/19S & CRN #70092) will meet on Tuesdays, February 5-April 23, from 5-6 p.m.. in Room 219 of the West Point extended campus, 202 Anna Stalp Avenue.

Taught via distance learning, this course provides an opportunity for review and writing concepts likely to be included in the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators test. The test is not included in the class.

Cost of the class, with Donny Short the instructor, is $120.

WEST POINT -Northeast Community College in West Point will be the site of an intermediate computer course, beginning soon.

Intermediate Computers I (INFO 5210/19S & CRN #70059) will meet Tuesday, February 5, from 6-9 p.m. in Room 212 of the West Point Extended Campus, 202 Anna Stalp Avenue.

Participants will learn intermediate computer skills using the Windows operating system in this course. Concepts will include starting programs, working with files and folders, tool bars, keyboard shortcuts and word processing tools, such as cut, copy and paste. Inserting pictures and text into documents will also be covered.

The course is suitable for the user who has some computer knowledge and can use a mouse and keyboard.

Cost of the course, with Lisa Hunke the instructor, is $30.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a CPR Instructor Course beginning soon.

The course (HLTH 1720/19S & CRN #24592) will meet February 6-16 on Wednesdays from 6-10 p.m., and Saturdays, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Class is held in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101, on the Northeast campus.

CPR instructor training for those currently qualified in basic life support. This one-credit course includes background materials, teaching techniques and aids to enable individuals to instruct others in the knowledge of local emergency care systems, understanding risk factors, signals and actions for survival, and recognition of indications for life support and accurate performance of the same.

Class participants must have a current AHA BLS CPR card. The required textbook is available at the Hawks Shop, which is located in the Student Center, (402) 844-7140.

Cost of the class, with Brock Soderberg the instructor, is $116.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a series of basic computer classes during the month of February.

Basic Computer I (INFO 5105/19S & CRN #70314) will be held Thursday, February 7, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center (LLC) on the Norfolk campus.

This class is for the person who has very limited computer knowledge or none at all. The student will be taught beginning computer skills, including powering the computer on and off, using a mouse and keyboard, utilizing the desktop, and launching programs.

Basic Computer II (INFO 5305/19S & CRN #70315) will be held Thursday, February 14, at the same time and location.

This class will review and build upon skills learned in Basic Computer I. Topics covered will include learning to use a word processor, working with tool and task bars, performing basic formatting functions, saving and printing documents.

Basic Computer III (INFO 5505/19S & CRN #70316) will be held Thursday, February 21, at the same time and location.

This class is for the person who has very limited computer knowledge. Students will continue to build upon and improve their skills with in-depth work with word processing, keyboard shortcuts and the internet.

All classes will be taught by Stacy Anderson at a very relaxed pace with significant hands-on practice. Cost of each class is $30.

WEST POINT– A new class hosted by the Northeast Community College West Point extended campus later this month will introduce participants to beekeeping.

Beginner Beekeeping (AGRI 5120/19S & CRN #70063) will be held Thursday, February 7, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in Room 219 of the West Point extended campus, 202 Anna Stalp Ave.

In this lectured-based class, participants will learn about beginner beekeeping. Instructor Melissa Heberer will provide an overview of a typical season’s work, honeybee life cycles, terminology and equipment needed. The goal of the class is to inspire further learning about honeybees and give participants the confidence to try beekeeping on their own.

Cost of the class is $20.
