NORFOLK – Secrets and lies will be the focus of two upcoming events at Northeast Community College. A Day of Secrets & Lies will be held Wednesday, October 11, at the Northeast Community CollePostSecret Live! at 7 p.m. in the same location.
Led by presenter Jordan Axani, “What’s Your Big Lie?” is based around the idea that everyone has a “big lie” they hide from the world that makes them feel alienated or alone. Participants will use their phones and an anonymous platform to submit their concerns and struggles, and the responses are then filtered and projected onto a screen for the audience to see. The program aims to encourage inclusivity and acceptance while giving participants strength and support from others.
Carissa Kollath, director of student activities, said “What’s Your Big Lie?” had an impact on students when Axani visited campus in March.
“The experience of being in a room with students and strangers and seeing your secret come up on the screen, and also seeing everyone else’s secrets and realizing you aren’t alone, is an emotional experience. We all have so much in common that we may be struggling with or hiding from the world. Jordan’s presentation shows we aren’t the only ones who are experiencing these feelings.”
PostSecret Live! is a multi-media presentation by Frank Warren, founder of www.postsecret.com The PostSecret phenomenon began in 2005 when Warren invited strangers to anonymously mail him their secrets on postcards, which he then posted to his website. Over a million individuals have taken part in PostSecret, and the website has spawned six bestselling books and multiple museum exhibits, including at the Smithsonian.
At the event, participants will see the postcards that were banned from the books and hear inspiring and funny stories behind some of the secrets. They will also learn about Warren’s own secret and can share their own at the microphone.
Warren will be available after the event to sign books. His book “The World of PostSecret” will be available for purchase.
“I am so excited to have the opportunity to bring PostSecret Live! to the Northeast campus,” Kollath said. “Frank’s project has helped many people over the years, and I’m eager for students to see how he combines artistry with anonymity to allow people to free themselves from the secrets they have been carrying.”
“I hope this day of events can build bridges and free individuals who have been carrying around secrets and lies for too long.”
All events are free and open to the public.ge campus. The event kicks off with two presentations of “What’s Your Big Lie?” at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center on the Norfolk campus. The day will wrap up with
