WEST POINT – A snowman-themed acrylic painting class is coming to Northeast Community College in West Point later this month.

Acrylic Snowman Painting (HOEC 5163/18S & CRN #70130) meets Wednesday, January 31, from 6:30-9 p.m. at the Northeast Community College Extended Campus, 202 Anna Stalp Avenue, Room 207.

Participants will join instructor Vanessa Throener for a fun night of painting and hot chocolate. The perfect way to enjoy winter days, this class teaches how to mix and blend colors while painting a snowman on canvas.

No prior experience is required and supplies will be provided and included in the cost of the class, which is $35.

Participants are asked to bring their own aprons to protect clothing.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer a commodities class for those in the agriculture industry beginning next month.

Commodities – Trading Basics & Strategies (AGRI 5115/18S & CRN #70246) will be held Thursdays, February 1-22, from 7-9 p.m. in Room 212 of the West Point extended campus, 202 Anna Stalp Avenue.

Taught via distance learning, this class is designed for those in the agriculture industry, including but not limited to, ethanol plants, grain producers, cattle feeders and others. Topics to be covered includes commodities, trading basics, contracts, futures and options.

WEST POINT – Northeast Community College in West Point will offer two classes next month to help familiarize iPhone and iPad users with their devices.

IPhone, IPad Basics (INFO 5160/18S & CRN #70137) will be held Thursday, February 1, from 6:30-9:30 p.m., at the Northeast Community College extended campus, 202 Anna Stalp Ave. in West Point. Class meets in Room 212.

In this course, students will discover how to use an iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch for emailing, browsing the web, managing time, getting directions, taking notes, taking photos and listening to music. They will explore free applications that can be downloaded to their devices. Participants need to bring the own iPad, iPhone or iPod fully charged, and also know their Apple ID or iCLoud ID and password.

IPhone, IPad Beyond the Basics (INFO 5360/18S & CRN #70140) will meet Thursday, February 8, at the same time and location.

This course is for iPhone and iPad owner who want to learn how to use their devices more efficiently. They will learn how to download and manage apps, configure email accounts, create presentations, utilize iCloud and iTunes and use Facetime.

NORFOLK –Two new professional development courses will be offered by Northeast Community College soon.

Conducting Productive & Effective Meetings (BSAD 5140/18S & CRN #70091) will meet Tuesday, January 23, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Norfolk Area Chamber of Commerce, 609 W. Norfolk Ave..

Even though meetings themselves are important because they assist in relationship building, communication, strategy planning and more, workers often find them boring and unproductive. This course will teach leaders strategies and tips for conducting effective meetings.

Generational Differences (BSAD 5235/18S & CRN #70093) will meet Thursday, February 1, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the same location.

As Baby Boomers continue to retire, employers are looking for ways to prepare for the changes and the challenges ahead. With five generations currently in the workforce, notable differences distinguish each as it defines their workplace styles, preferences and decision making. This training examines generational gaps and solutions for managing and inspiring relationships that enhance and support one another.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a CPR Instructor Course beginning soon.

The course (HLTH 1720/18S & CRN #24215) will meet Saturday and Sunday, January 20 and 21, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101, on the Northeast campus.

CPR instructor training for those currently qualified in basic life support. This course includes background materials, teaching techniques and aids to enable individuals to instruct others in the knowledge of local emergency care systems, understanding risk factors, signals and actions for survival, and recognition of indications for life support and accurate performance of the same.

Class participants must have a current AHA BLS CPR card. The required textbook is available at the Hawks Shop, which is located in the Student Center, (402) 844-7140.

NORFOLK – The Applied Technology Division at Northeast Community College will offer a two-credit course for those who would like to take the State Electrical Exam for licensing.

Electrical Licensing Prep (ELTR 2025/18S & CRN #23475) will be held on Mondays and Tuesdays, January 29-February 27, from 7-10 p.m. in the Applied Technology building, Room 115, on the Northeast campus in Norfolk.

Instructor Dan Frohberg will prep students in Basic Electricity Calculations, Code Sections and State of Nebraska Electrical Law.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer another Heart Code – BLS for Healthcare Provider Online & Skills Session course, beginning soon.

The first portion of this course (HLTH 5300/18S & CRN #70223) is web-based and is available on-line
24 hours a day. The skills session meets Saturday, January 27, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m., in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101, on the Norfolk campus.

The Basic Life Support course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking. This course is designed for the first time or renewal certification and has two parts for completion.

Part 1 provides a flexible alternative to classroom training. Part 2 is a skills session where hands on practice and competency testing are completed with a Certified AHA Instructor. When online Part 1 is completed, students will register for the Skills Sessions. Participants are to bring their online completion certificate (Part 1 completed within the last 60 days) to the Skills Session for which they have registered.

Online key codes for Part 1 are available at the Hawks Shop in the Student Center on the Norfolk campus, (402) 844-7140. NOTE: Participants need to bring their AHA Part 1 Health Care Provider Online Course Completion Certificate to be admitted to the Skills Session. No textbook is required for this class.

NORFOLK – The Allied Health Division at Northeast Community College will offer additional Heart Code – Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid On-line Skills Sessions.

Three testing sessions – Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid (HLTH 5130/18S & CRN #70202); Heartsaver CPR/AED – Adult, Infant and Child (HLTH 5150/18S & CRN #70203); Heartsaver First Aid (HLTH 5105/18S & CRN #70201) will be held Saturday, January 27, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. in the Arlo Wirth building, Room 101, on the Norfolk campus.

The Heartsaver CPR/AED and First Aid course CPR/AED (testing sessions will cover any of the combinations as listed above) – teaching rescuers to recognize and treat cardiac arrest and choking for adults, children and infant victims, use an AED and First Aid – teaching management of certain environmental reactions; allergic reactions, cuts, wounds, bites, and various situations requiring treatments.

The on-line course is designed for the first time or renewal certification. This course is accessible 24 hours a day and provides a flexible alternative to classroom training for the course itself. After completing this course, students are eligible to register for the testing session. NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will offer a class on healthy meal preparation beginning soon.

Meal Prep for Weight Loss (HOEC 5175/18S & CRN #70249) meets on Saturday, January 20, from 9-11 a.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center on the Norfolk campus.

Using an InBody assessment, participants will learn to set realistic weight loss goals and determine their personal macronutrients and caloric intake. They will discover the true reasons they struggle with weigh and learn the five steps of problem solving. They will receive a meal plan, grocery list, recipes and tips for successful meal preparation. The InBody assessment, handouts and food samples are included.

NORFOLK – Northeast Community College in Norfolk will be the site of a Paramedic Refresher course, sponsored by the Allied Health Department.

This course (EMTN 6295/18S & CRN #70087), will meet Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, January 23-25, from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the Lifelong Learning Center on the Norfolk campus.

This is a 24-hour refresher training course that fulfills one-half of the mandatory and flexible core content required for recertification as a Nationally Registered Paramedic. Topics to be covered include Mandatory Core Content: eight hours of airway, breathing and cardiology; three hours of medical emergencies; and five hours trauma. Flexible Core Content: five hours medical emergencies, one hour trauma and two hours operational tasks.

The cost of the class is $187 and includes a lunch buffet for the three days.

NORFOLK – A new course at Northeast Community College will celebrate Valentine’s Day with a fun porch sign craft.

Valentine’s Porch Sign (HOEC 5135/18S & CRN #70250) will be held Tuesday, January 30, from 6:30-8 p.m. in Room 105A of the Weller Building on the Norfolk campus.

In this class, participants will make a “Welcome” porch sign with a Valentine’s Day theme. They will learn the techniques and tricks to create the sign and paint the sign in class.

HARTINGTON – The Hartington regional office of Northeast Community College will offer a kids’ crochet class in Hartington next month.

Crochet – Winter Kids’ Pom-Pom Hat (HOEC 5130/18S & CRN #70107) will be held Thursday, February 1, from 4-6 p.m. in Hartington at the Hartington Public Library, 106 S. Broadway Ave.

In this after-school class, participants will make a winter pom-pom hat. It is suitable for children in grades four through eight.

Students will need to bring an “N” crochet hook, two bulky skeins of yarn, Lion Brand Wool-ease in your choice of color and scissors.

Smartphone Applications (INFO 5200/18S & CRN #70067) will meet Monday, January 22, from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at Creighton Public Library, 701 State Street, in Creighton.

This course will cover the basic usage and applications of using an Android smartphone and iPhone. This class is recommended for anyone who is struggling to use their smart phone and all of its applications.

All Things Google (INFO 5215/18S & CRN #70103) will be held Wednesday, January 24, from 6-9 p.m. at Hartington-Newcastle Public Schools, 501 S. Broadway Avenue, in Hartington.

Many think of Google as a search engine, but this course will explore the many Google Apps available to users. Students will explore how Google can enhance and organize their lives. Topics will include Google Docs, Earth, Images, Translate, Maps, Calendar and others.

Excel for Beginners (INFO 5115/18S & CRN #70104) will be held Monday, January 29, from 6-9 p.m. at Hartington-Newcastle Public Schools, 501 S. Broadway Avenue, in Hartington.

In this hands-on class, participants will learn a basic “How to” for Microsoft Excel. Topics to be covered include creating a new spreadsheet, formatting, auto-correct, spell-check, saving, printing and utilizing tools and settings.

Tablets I (INFO 5165/18S & CRN #70106) will meet Wednesday, January 31, from 6-9 p.m. at Hartington-Newcastle Public Schools, 501 S. Broadway Avenue, in Hartington.

In this course, participants will learn how to use their own touchscreen tablets, including how to connect to the internet at home or elsewhere; download content, including music and videos; install and use various applications; organize photos and documents; and use their tablets as an e-reader.
