The Dix Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department responded to a fire call at 11 p.m at the Frenchman Valley Coop grain elevator in Dix.
According to the Fire Marshall the cause of the fire was a lightning strike. The blaze started in the seed cleaning and elevator that was adjoined to the main office building. The fire department was on the scene until 6 a.m. Friday.
“The structure was a wooden structure covered with tin on the elevator part. That is extremely difficult to extinguish from the exterior because there’s no good way to get a stream of water to what’s burning,” said Deputy Chief of Dix Volunteer Fire and Rescue Walter Kielian.
Throughout the night firefighters not only had to battle the blaze but also the elements as thunderstorms rolled through the area. “We battled serious thunderstorm activity like medium sized hail at one point” said Kielian.
He added they battled strong winds and heavy rain while they fought the fire.
Dix Fire and Rescue received help from both the Kimball and Potter Volunteer Fire Departments.
