One dead in attempted Grand Island murder/suicide

Grand Island, Neb. – One person is dead and another is in the hospital after an attempted, murder/suicide in Grand Island. At 8:43 am, on Thursday, the Grand Island Police Department responded to a fatal shooting incident at 3111 W. College Street. Physical evidence and victim statements indicate that this incident was an attempted homicide/suicide. The suspect in this incident, 43 year old, Milton Alvarado, a Grand Island male is deceased.

The victim, 42 year old Grand Island female, Silvia Garcia Mares, was involved in an intimate relationship with the suspect. She is doing well and in stable condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the head and base of the neck. There are no additional suspects at large or continued dangers to the community.

The GIPD is urging anyone who is being victimized or knows of an abusive domestic situation to call 911 or Grand Island area residents to utilize the Crisis Center Hotline at 308-381-0555.
