Construction on the addition to the Scotts Bluff County Detention Center is nearly complete.
That was the word Monday from Detention Center Director Joe Gaul, who told the Scotts Bluff County Board Reilly Johnson architects will be here later this week on the 10th to begin a punch-card list of things that need to be done before the planned completion date May 15th.
Gaul says the week of the 21st, Jail Standards Board Chief Dennis Macomber and representatives with Reilly Johnson will be here to conduct an inspection of the facility.
Gaul says if everything goes as planned he hopes to open the new addition by the first of June. It will increase the capacity from 209 to 274.
The addition also includes a much needed ten bed medical unit and an area to keep work release inmates separate from the rest of the population, which is intended to reduce the amount of contraband coming into the facility.
Gaul says the jail is still restructuring management for efficiency purposes as it hires and trains an additional ten to twelve corrections officers to work in the new addition. The jail is currently holding 195 people and 20 more are at other locations in Torrington and Lexington. Gaul says those 20 inmates will be back at the Gering jail when the new addition opens .
