A 35-year-old Scottsbluff man clocked doing twice the posted speed limit is facing a variety charges in Scotts Bluff County Court.

Deputies say they clocked Jared McKenzie traveling 60 miles per hour on 5th Avenue Saturday evening in the 30 m.p.h. zone. When authorities activated their lights and tried to pull him over, the Ford Ranger he was driving accelerated at high rates of speed into side streets.

The pursuit was terminated, but the investigation revealed the vehicle matched a description from a traffic stop made last month. McKenzie was identified as the suspect, and he met with deputies and admitted to driving on 5th Avenue during that time.

He said that he never saw any police lights or heard sirens. Authorities matched his vehicle to the one during the pursuit, and arrested him on charges of Willful Reckless Driving, Flight to Avoid Arrest, and Speeding (21 to 35 mph over speed limit).

McKenzie was scheduled to make his first appearance on the charges on Monday in Scotts Bluff County Court.
