GRAND ISLAND – It wasn’t easy, but the York (5-2) football team survived the Northwest (3-4) Vikings, 35-19 Friday night.
Trailing 16-7 at the half, the Dukes would outscore Northwest, 28-3 in the last two quarters. Garrett Snodgrass scored another four touchdowns and the York defense made big play after big play in the second half to rally the team to a district win.
Northwest scored first with a 36 yard field goal by Jason Bachle on their first drive of the game. York responded with a 13 play drive that saw Snodgrass pass to Jeb Lucas for a 16 yard touchdown. Should be noted, the Vikings possessed the ball for nearly 10 minutes to start the game.
To start the second quarter, Northwest scored their first touchdown on a two yard scamper by Adam Cooper. The Vikings would both a field goal attempt two drives later. Just before half, Carter Terry threw a 51 yard touchdown to Andrew Korte.
The third and fourth quarter was dominated by the Dukes. A missed 46 yard field goal by Bachle allowed York to find the endzone on their next drive. Jacob Diaz bulldozed in from 26 yards out. Northwest would fumble on their next drive. On the very next play, Snodgrass would find Reid Hoffman for a 37 yard touchdown pass.
York put the game away in the fourth quarter on two touchdown runs by Snodgrass, one from six yards and another from one yard.
Snodgrass ran for 83 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw for 121 yards and two more touchdowns. Diaz finished with 125 yards and one score. Brady Danielson was the leading receiver with four catches for 61 yards. York committed six penalties for 40 yards.
Northwest was balanced on the offensive side. Cooper rushed for 79 yards and one touchdown. Avery Castenada ran for 44 yards. Terry passed for 135 yards and one touchdown. His leading receiver was Korte with three catches for 59 yards and a touchdown.
York is back on the road next Friday at Seward.
