LINCOLN – It was a quick trip to Lincoln for the Sutton Mustangs as they fell in the opening round of the C2 state basketball tournament on Thursday to Yutan, 53-45.

Making their first trip to Lincoln since 2014, Sutton never grabbed the lead as the Chieftains offense thrived all day. The Mustangs struggled to stop Yutan as Brady Timm went off for 25 points, including two three pointers and was 9-10 at the free throw line. As Sutton struggled to stop Yutan, their offense was ice cold, scoring seven points in both the first and third quarters. Turnovers also became a factor, giving it away 12 times.

Falling down by as many as 14 points, Sutton cut the deficit down to six in the fourth quarter as the Mustangs started dropping in three balls. However, the comeback would fall short as Yutan made their free throws down the stretch.

Sutton saw seven different players score in the losing effort. Seth George led all scorers with 11 points. Cade Wiseman knocked in nine points, all three pointers. Kyle Baumert and Garrett Nuss each scored seven. The Mustangs made six three pointers as a team. Besides Timm’s 25 points, Clayton Nelson scored 10 points and Jason Simon scored seven.

Yutan will play Ponca in the semifinals on Friday. Sutton ends the year with a 24-3 overall record.
