Briar Cliff Baseball wins over Dakota State

Briar Cliff Baseball wins over Dakota State

Briar Cliff took on Dakota State in nonconference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Bishop Mueller Field as the home Chargers came away with an 8-1 victory.

Briar Cliff led early as the Chargers plated a run before ever recording a hit. The first two batters for the Blue and Gold grounded out to third base, Dakota State starting pitcher Trey Randel then allowed four straight free passes with one walk and three hit batters for the first run to cross the plate. Trevor Adler followed that up with an infield single to score another run as BC led 2-0 after one frame.

Dakota State threatened in the top half of the inning, but starting pitcher Jake Hubbard got out of a jam with two runners on and only one out with a 4-6-3 double play.

Hubbard picked up the victory on the mound, finishing the game with 5.0 innings of work while allowing one run on six hits. Hubbard struck out two and allowed one walk.

The Cliff led 3-0 heading into the fifth before the Trojans got their only run of the game on a home run by Jerrett Plunkett. Briar Cliff added four insurance runs in the seventh and tacked on one more in the eighth to cruise to the win.

Zayne Mowen and Austin Carter combined for four scoreless innings of relief. Mowen pitched 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and two walks. Carter finished the game on the mound and retired all seven batters he faced with three punchouts.

Adler was the only Charger batter with multiple hits as the shortstop finished the game 2-for-5 at the plate. Michael Anthony led all players with three RBIs while Nick Robinson and Darnell Prince each came around to score twice. Anthony and Prince had BC’s only extra base hit with both players recording doubles. Robinson stole two bases.

Briar Cliff moved to 16-11 with the win. The Chargers return to GPAC action on Saturday as the team will be the visitors in a doubleheader with Concordia. Due to field conditions in Seward, the games will be played at Bishop Mueller Field with a 1 p.m. start time. Dakota State fell to 3-12 with the loss.
