Briar Cliff falls in both Monday games

Briar Cliff softball dropped two games Monday afternoon at the Spring Games in Florida. The Chargers rallied from 10-4 deficit in Game One but could not complete the comeback and fell 10-9 to Northwestern Ohio. In the second game of the day, BC held a 2-1 lead after five innings but gave up four runs in the sixth and lost 6-2.

Briar Cliff held a 4-0 lead after two innings in the first contest but Northwest Ohio scored six runs in the third to take the lead and added one run in the fourth and three in the fifth inning. BC clawed its way back but ultimately fell in the high-scoring game.

Alayna Allen was the starting pitcher for the Cliff and gave up five runs in 2.1 innings. Offensively she had three RBIs. Abbygail Lint threw three innings and Lanae Shiley threw 1.2 innings in relief. Five batters had multiple hits, led by Bailey Nichols, who went 3-for-5 at the plate.

Aubrey Brunst pitched all seven innings in the win for the Racers.

The Chargers held the Bruins, who received votes in the national preseason poll, to just one run in the first five innings and the score was 1-0 going into the sixth. Bellevue got its bats going in the top of the sixth, however, scoring four runs in that inning alone and adding one in the seventh.

Summer Williams is tagged with the loss, giving up five runs on eight hits in five innings of work. Kayla Guerrero finished the game for the Cliff. Nichols again led the Chargers, going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Brieanna Brock earned the victory for the Bruins, pitching all seven innings and striking out nine batters.

BC softball falls to 2-6 on the season. The team will be off Tuesday and return to action Wednesday morning as they take on Carlow University at 10:30 a.m. The Chargers will also take on Cardinal Stritch that afternoon with opening pitch coming at 12:45 p.m.
