Briar Cliff loses in four at Northwestern

Trailing two sets to none, the Charger women’s volleyball team stormed back against #9 Northwestern Friday night in Orange City, Iowa, but ultimately came up short as the Red Raiders won the match 3-1 (25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 25-23).

Victoria Gonzalez led the Cliff attack with 18 kills and an attack percentage of .310. Courtney Schafer had 12 kills in the match and Analyse Stapleton finished with seven Ks. Briar Cliff ended the night attacking at a rate of .188 on 49 kills. The team improved each set on the night, hitting at .125 in the first, .185 in set two, .209 in the third stanza and .226 in the final set.

A trio of Northwestern attackers tallied double-digit kill totals including Lauryn Hilger (16), Emily Van Ginkel (15) and Makenzie Fink (11). The Red Raiders had 61 kills as a team with an attack percentage of .362.

Defensively for the Chargers, Delaney Meyer led the team with 12 digs. Brooklyn Tolliver had 10 digs on the night. Meyer also had 20 assists for the Blue and Gold, second on the team to Maureen Imrie‘s 23. Northwestern’s Emily Strasser led all players in digs with 21 and Lacey Wacker handled the majority of setting responsibilities for the Red Raiders with 52 assists.

Aside from the edge in team digs (48-40), Northwestern also had an advantage in blocks by a 13-4 margin. Van Ginkel was the top blocker with three solo blocks and five block assists for the Red Raiders. Elizabeth Koch led all Chargers in blocks with one solo and one assist.

The win improved Northwestern to 21-5 (12-2 GPAC), while Briar Cliff dropped to 11-12 overall and 5-9 in league play. The Chargers return to action Tuesday in a non-conference match at Mount Mercy before returning to the Newman Flanagan Center for a GPAC contest against (RV) Jamestown on Friday, October 26.
