Briar Cliff Softball goes 1-1 in first games of 2019

BC softball got the 2019 season underway in Florida Friday by going 1-1. The Chargers won the first game 5-1 over Trinity International before falling 4-0 to St. Thomas.

Alayna Allen pitched all seven innings of the first contest for the Cliff, striking out nine batters and allowing six hits and one run. The first two innings were quiet for both teams as neither scored but the Chargers got on the board in the top of the third when Johanna Vaske hit a line drive to left field and Brooklyn Barnett and Nicole Wiles each came home.

Trinity International cut the Briar Cliff lead in half with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Emily Riha scored with a single by Bailey Nichols in the sixth for the Cliff to go up 3-1. The Chargers added two more runs in the seventh inning for the team to start the season at 1-0.

Four pitchers saw action in the second game of the day. Summer Williams struck out one batter. Wiles was the only Charger to record a hit, reaching first in the top of the seventh inning.

“For our first showing, the tam showed a lot of heart and progress,” said head coach Erin Bly. “We will take what we learned today and continue to grow and improve.”

The Blue and Gold are now 1-1 on the season. The team will play again tomorrow in Florida at 8:15 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Central Standard Time.
