Briar Cliff Volleyball loses at home to Hastings

Briar Cliff came out hot with a 25-20 win in set one Saturday at the Newman Flanagan Center, but the Chargers weren’t able to maintain momentum as Hastings took the match 3-1.

The Broncos, ranked #14 in the country, held a big advantage in blocks (15-5) and finished the night with the 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-17) win.

Emily Lenners was a key all night with one solo block and 10 block assists for Hastings. She also recorded 10 kills with an attack percentage of .588.

BC’s Courtney Schafer tied for a game-high in kills with 14. She was matched in K’s by Sage Meyer of Hastings. Grace Hanno also recorded double-digit kills with 10. The Chargers nearly recorded the same amount of kills as the visiting Broncos, with Hastings edging the Cliff 48-47.

Defensively, the Chargers had the advantage in total digs with 68 compared to Hastings’ 59. Danielle Coronado led all BC players with 18 digs. Brooklyn Tolliver had 10 for the Blue and Gold. Casey Krolikowski had a match-high 19 digs. Meyer recorded 10 for the Broncos.

Each team had setting duties split primarily between two players. Delaney Meyer had the most assists for any one player with 22. Maureen Imrie had 19 for the Cliff. Clare Hamburger and Claira Thede had 18 and 15 for the Broncos, respectively.

Both teams had twice as many service errors as aces. Briar Cliff had three aces, two from Tolliver and one from Coronado. Hastings was much more aggressive from the service line and finished with seven team aces to 14 errors. Rielyn Hoffman was the top producer with three aces and no errors.

The win improved Hastings to 14-5 overall and 9-3 in GPAC play. Briar Cliff dropped to 5-7 in the conference and 11-10 overall. The Chargers continue a challenging part of their schedule next week with a match against #8 Dordt at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Newman Flanagan Center before traveling to face #12 Northwestern on Friday.
