Creighton Baseball drops series opener at Evansville

Evansville, Ind. — Facing the Ace of Evansville, the Bluejay bats were held in check into the seventh inning as Creighton dropped a 7-1 decision on Friday, March 15. The loss moved the Bluejays to 7-4 on the season, while Evansville bounced to 8-6.

Creighton leadoff man junior Isaac Collins drew a leadoff walk to open the game, then stole second, but was stranded in the opening frame. The Creighton offense did not put another base runner on until the fifth as junior Jason Allbery drew a two-out walk.

The Bluejays’ first hit came in the seventh as junior Jake Holton blooped a one-out single to left. Finally in the ninth junior Will Robertson blasted a solo home run to right to get the Jays on the scoreboard.

Meanwhile Evansville plated six runs in the second, taking advantage of a costly Bluejay error with two down for five unearned runs. The Aces got a leadoff single, then after two men were retired, Bluejay starter Mitch Ragan hit nine-hole hitter Matthew Jones. Evansville’s leadoff man Nate Reeder, plated the first run with a leadoff single, then a Creighton error opened the floodgates.

Evansville added an insurance run in the fourth, but were held down otherwise.

Ragan took the loss (2-1) for the Bluejays, allowing seven runs (two earned) on six hits in 3.2 innings. Adam Lukas earned the win (2-2), allowing just one hit and two walks in seven innings of work.

Creighton and Evansville continued the three-game series on Saturday, with first pitch slated for 2:00 pm.
