Creighton Softball loses to New Mexico State on Final Day of Invitational

LAS CRUCES, N.M. — The Creighton softball team concluded its first weekend of the season with a 9-1 loss against New Mexico State on Sunday during the final day of the New Mexico State Invitational.

The Bluejays ended its stay in Las Cruces, New Mexico with a 1-4 record.

Creighton’s lone run on Sunday against the Aggies came during the fifth and final inning.

The Bluejays half of the fifth started with three consecutive pinch hitters. Victoria Alvarez entered and promptly hit a triple into right-center field, Nicole Simonson reached on an error and Nikki McNeil walked to load the bases with no outs.

After an interference call between first and second produced the first out of the inning, Sam Alm delivered an RBI fielder’s choice to the middle of the diamond to send home Alvarez from third.

The Bluejays ended the top half of the fifth with a ground out to first and two runners left on base.

Prior to Alvarez’s triple, Mileah McKelvy’s full-count single during the top of the first resulted in Creighton’s only other hit on Sunday.

New Mexico State took early control of the game with a pair of two-run homers in the bottom of the first inning. Victoria Castro and Mya Felder each launched homers as the Aggies scored four runs off of three hits.

The defending WAC champions scored one in both the second and third before Felder hit a three-run homer to left field in the fourth to put New Mexico State in front 9-0.

Creighton had three players reach base during the first three innings, but only one advanced past first.

McKelvy was the only Bluejay to reach base during each of Creighton’s first five games of the season. The junior outfielder had four hits, walked twice and was hit by the pitch on two other occasions for a .500 on-base percentage to close out the first weekend of the season. She also drove in four runs for the Bluejays, which ranked second behind Kelli Finan who had five.

Creighton heads to Denton, Texas for the Mean Green Classic, Feb. 15-16, where the Bluejays will match-up against Arkansas-Pine Bluff (twice), Northwestern State and North Texas.
