Creighton Softball splits games on Day Two of Mean Green Classic

DENTON, TEXAS — Kiele Miller recorded a no-hitter as the Creighton softball team shutout Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 9-0, and the Bluejays salvaged a split during a pair of games on Saturday at the Mean Green Classic. Creighton lost to host North Texas, 7-3, during the Bluejays’ first game of the day.

Creighton ended its stay at the Mean Green Classic with a 3-1 mark and improved its overall record to 4-5.

Miller tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts and needed only 72 pitches for her five-inning no-hit performance. She also recorded the 24th no-hitter during head coach Brent Vigness‘ tenure at Creighton, and the Bluejays’ first solo no-hitter since April 2, 2016 (Micaela Whitney at Seton Hall).

Pine Bluff had one runner advance to first base on an error during the first and had two others reach after getting hit by the pitch in the second before Miller sat down the final 12 batters she faced.

Creighton scored three runs in the first and second innings, one in the third and two in the fourth.

Sam Alm finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs, while Kiara Mills had two hits and two RBIs and a total of seven different players had at least one run batted in as the Bluejays shut out the Golden Lions for the second consecutive day.

Creighton recorded a season-high 14 hits against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Ashley CantuKaitlynn Hunt and Sydney Jenkins each had two hits to join Alm and Mills with multiple hits.

The Bluejays left only three runners on base against the Golden Lions.

Creighton held a three-run edge after the first inning against North Texas before the host Mean Green scored seven unanswered runs.

Cantu and Mileah McKelvy led off the game with consecutive singles before Finan launched a three-run homer over the left-field wall to give the Bluejays a 3-0 edge.

North Texas quickly cut the deficit to a single run by scoring twice in the bottom of the first. An RBI double and RBI single produced the two Mean Green runs.

Creighton threatened in the second inning as Jayci Foster started the inning with a single and the Bluejays put runners at second and third but a double play ended the inning without a run scored.

The Mean Green scored four runs during the second inning to take their first lead of the game. Two singles and a pair of home runs put North Texas in front 6-3 after the second inning.

The Bluejays managed only one base runner after the second inning as Foster reached on an error in the top of the fourth.

North Texas added to the final score with a run during the fifth inning.

Creighton returns to action next weekend at the Frost Classic in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The Bluejays open play in Tennessee against Evansville on Friday morning.
