Creighton Women fall at FSU

Tallahassee, Fla. — Tied at 44-44 late in the third quarter, the Creighton women’s basketball team suffered a late scoring drought as the Bluejays fell to Florida State 71-52 on Sunday, Dec. 16.The loss moved Creighton to 4-5 on the season, while Florida State moved to 10-1 overall.

Creighton jumped out to an early 11-4 lead in the opening four minutes, getting nine points from junior Jaylyn Agnew during the run. Florida State, however, closed within a point by the end of the period, getting a mid-range bucket from Nicki Ekhomu with one second left to make it 19-18.

Back-to-back Bluejays buckets opened the second quarter as senior Jade Owens and sophomore Tatum Rembao each got into the scoring column. Following a Florida State trey, Rembao delviered two more buckets on driving layups to make it 27-21 with 6:47 left. The Seminoles responded with a 7-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 28-27 (4:25). Creighton stayed within striking distance, down just 32-31 with 28 seconds left, but another late bucket from Ekhomu send the Seminoles to the locker room with a 34-31 edge.

Down 44-39 with 3:20 left in to the third, the Bluejays appeared to snatch the momentum as senior Audrey Faber drained a three-ball from the right corner. With the ball in the air, Agnew was fouled to setup a potential five-point play for Creighton. Agnew calmly knocked down both from the charity stripe to knot the game at 44-44. Florida State answered the challenge with five straight of its own, closing the third on a 9-2 run to take a 53-46 edge into the final ten minutes.

Starting the fourth the Bluejays delivered back-to-back layups from Agnew and Faber to make it a one possession game at 53-50 (8:13), but Creighton went socreless over the next 7:59 as Florida State but the game away.

Agnew led Creighton with 19 points, while Faber closed with 15 points and Rembao rounded out the Bluejays in double figures with 10 points. Florida State got a game-high 24 points from Ekhomu, while Kiah Gillespie finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bluejays return to the hardwood on Thursday, Dec. 20 as Creighton battles South Florida in the first game for both teams in the Sunshine Class. Tip is scheduled for 5:15 pm.
