Brookings, S.D. — Despite 23 points from senior Audrey Faber, the Creighton women’s basketball team fell to South Dakota State 74-48 on Thursday, Nov. 15.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 1-2 on the season, while South Dakota State moved to 3-1.
Things got off to a rocky start as South Dakota State opened the game on an 11-0 run, forcing Creighton head coach Jim Flanery into a timeout with 5:18 remaining in the opening quarter. Creighton responded to its head coach as the Bluejays found Faber on the left wing for a three-pointer. Faber’s trey got the Bluejays offense cooking as the Bluejays went on a 12-2 run to make it a one point game at 13-12 with 2:24 left in the period. Faber delivered 10 of Creighton’s first 12 points, dishing an assist to junior Morgan Turner for the other bucket. South Dakota State answered with eight straight points, before Faber found sophomore Tatum Rembao for a trey to close the quarter down 21-15.
South Dakota State controlled the Bluejays in the second and third period, outscoring Creighton 40-12 over the next 20 minutes to push its lead to 61-27 entering the fourth. The Jackrabbits extended their edge to as much as 39 points at 68-29 with 5:59 left in the fourth period, before Creighton closed the game on a 19-6 run.
Faber’s 23 points led Creighton, while junior Olivia Elger contributed 11 points all in the fourth quarter.
South Dakota State’s Macy Miller matched Faber with 23 points, but also collected 10 rebounds in the win. Two other Jackrabbits finished in double figures as Myah Selland delivered 13 points and Sydney Palmer finished with 10 points.
Creighton returns to the hardwood on Tuesday, Nov. 20 as the Bluejays travel to Cedar Falls, Iowa to face the Northern Iowa Panthers at 6:00 pm.
