Creighton Women lose at South Dakota

Vermillion, S.D. — Trailing by as much as 14 early in the final period, the Creighton women’s basketball team rallied to make it a one possession game before falling to South Dakota, 73-68, on Tuesday, Nov. 14.

The loss dropped the Bluejays to 1-1 on the season, while the Coyotes also evened their record at 1-1.

The first quarter was a back-and-forth battle, with each squad authoring small runs. After the Coyotes scored the opening two buckets, Creighton responded with treys from sophomore Jaylyn Agnew and senior Myah Mellman. A 5-0 run from South Dakota gave the lead back to the Coyotes at 9-6, but Creighton responded with layups from freshman Tatum Rembao and senior Bailey Norby.

Knotted at 12-12 entering the second period South Dakota surged ahead 25-17 in the opening five minutes, but Creighton responded with a 12-4 run to knot the game at 29-29. Junior Audrey Faber led the charge for the Bluejays with eight of her 15 points, capped by a trey to tie the game with 2:03 left in the half. South Dakota, however, scored the final four points of the frame to take a 33-29 edge into the break.

The Coyotes continued their run at the start of the third with eight more points, extending their lead to 41-29 in the first two minutes. A trifecta from Agnew stopped South Dakota’s explosion, yet Creighton trailed 52-40 heading into the fourth.

South Dakota dropped in the first bucket of the final frame to push its lead to its largest margin at 54-40 (9:28), but Agnew answered with her third trey of the contest. Down 59-45 with 7:13 showing on the clock, the Bluejays used a 13-2 run to close the contest to a one possession game. A traditional three-point play got things rolling for Creighton.

Creighton returns to the floor on Sunday, Nov. 19 as the Bluejays take on intrastate rival Nebraska in Lincoln at 7:00 pm.
