David City girls dominate, Wolverine boys survive on the road
RRN/David City vs. Wilber-Clatonia
The David City Scouts girls basketball team was never really threatened Friday evening as they won their second game in as many nights, beating winless Wilber-Clatonia 45-28 in David City.
Freshman Neely Behrns scored 6 points in the first quarter, as the Scouts, who never trailed in the contest, opened up an 18-9 lead. The Wolverines played David city on even terms in the second and third quarters, and after three David City maintained a 31-23 advantage.
In the final period, a pair of 3-pointers by David City senior Macy Svoboda, helped propel the Scouts to 14 more points, while the Wolverines could only muster five, as the Scouts pulled away and sealed the victory.
Svoboda finished with 11 points for David City, now 6-15, while Behrns led the way with 12. Senior Shaylee Blum led all scorers with 13 for the 0-20 Wolverines.
In the boys game, David City never trailed until Wilber-Clatonia got their first and only lead with 38 seconds left, and then held on for a dramatic 47-46 victory on the Scouts home floor.
David City led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter, thanks in large part to Senior Luis Salazar’s 7 points. The Wolverines kept it close during the second period, but still trailed by four, 22-18 at the half.
The fireworks began in the third quarter, when both squads got hot and scored a combined 29 points, with Wilber-Clatonia closing the gap to trail by just one, 35-34.
The Wolverines still trailed until senior Coltin Rezabek finally tied the game at 40, by sinking 2 free throws with 3:57 to go in the game. Then David City junior Josh Seibert quickly hit a pair of treys, and just like that the Scouts were back up 46-40, and appeared to have the game in hand. But Wilber-Clatonia’s 6-7 junior Bradyn Whittington hit a close range shot, and senior Hunter Cerveny drained a three-pointer to make it a one point game 46-45. After a miss by David City, Wolverine senior Regie Homolka hit a layup with 38 seconds left, to give Wilber Clatonia their first lead of the night. After a David City timeout with 4.7 seconds left, Seibert, surrounded by Wolverines, missed a long attempt at the buzzer, and Wilber-Clatonia won 47-46.
Bradyn Wittington scored 13 points for the 14-7 Wilber-Clatonia squad, with Regie Homolka adding 10. David City’s Josh Seibert led all scorers with 15, while teammate Luis Salazar added13 for the Scouts, now 11-10.
