ALBION – Make it back-to-back years as state champions for the David City senior legion baseball team. On Wednesday night, David City beat Pender, 10-6 for the Class C state title.
David City grabbed the lead early, putting up a five spot in the second inning. They would tack on another run in the third inning to make a comfortable, 6-0 lead after three frames.
Pender responded with a three spot in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth inning to tie the game at six heading to the sixth inning.
The David City seniors would separate themselves for good in the sixth frame, plating four runs.
David City scored 10 runs on 10 hits while committing four errors. Jackson Jakub picked up the win on the mound. Pender scored six runs on nine hits while committing two errors.
It was the second time in the state tournament that David City beat Pender. They handed Pender their first loss, 2-1 in the third round.
It’s the third overall senior state championship in team history for David City. They were also crowned champions in 1951 in Class B.
