AMES, Iowa- No. 19 Iowa State (19-7, 8-5 Big 12) fell to Baylor (17-9, 8-5) 73-69 Tuesday night in Hilton Coliseum.
Iowa State shot 43.3 percent for the game, but could not overcome a 44-28 discrepancy on the glass. Eighteen of BU’s boards were on the offensive end.
How It Happened
A 14-0 run helped the Bears take an early 19-9 lead in the contest. Eight of the 14 points by BU came from second-chance points via offensive rebounds.
Iowa State was able to cut the lead to one point (32-31) with 3:06 remaining, but the Bears went into the break with a 38-34 lead.
BU had a 23-13 advantage on the boards in the first half.
A hot start to the second half aided the Cyclones to a 44-42 lead. Tyrese Haliburton hit a 3-pointer and Talen Horton-Tucker made a spinning lay-in, as ISU held its first lead since the early part of the first half.
The game featured 12 ties or lead changes in the next 11 minutes, as the Cyclones were clinging to a 63-62 lead with 6:22 remaining. ISU then went on a four-minute scoring drought, as the Bears took a 69-65 lead with 1:30 left in the contest.
BU proceeded to ice the game by making its free-throws down the stretch.
Players of Note
Marial Shayok led the Cyclones in scoring for the 16th time this season with 20 points. He was 8-of-17 from the field and 3-of-6 from 3-point range. It was the 12th 20-point outing of the season for the senior.
Nick Weiler-Babb scored eight points (4-10 FG) and led the Cyclones in rebounds (7) and assists (6). Weiler-Babb moves to No. 13 on ISU’s career assist list with 313.
Iowa State travels to TCU on Saturday (Feb. 23). Tipoff is at 1 p.m.
