Iowa State 2, UNI 0
Mortimer, backed by an excellent outing from her defense, was the story of the day. The freshman was dominant throughout, recording five 1-2-3 innings, including the final two frames. The defense did its part as the freshman hurler induced ground outs pop-ups throughout the Panther batting order.
Taylor Nearad got the offense jump-started in the bottom of the fourth inning. The senior roped a lead-off double to right field, and later advanced to third on a deep fly ball by Kaylee Bosworth. With Sally Woolpert at the plate, a UNI pitch squirted away from the catcher to the backstop, and Nearad charged home, sliding in safe to score the first run of the day.
Bosworth reached base via walk in the home half of the sixth, and was later moved over to second on a ground ball. Lewis then stepped to the plate and crushed an RBI double off the wall in right field, as Bosworth raced home to tack on an insurance run for the Cyclones.
Mortimer and company stayed true to form, sending the Panther batters back to the dugout in order in the top of the seventh to seal the deal on the Cyclone win.
Iowa State will travel to Waco, Texas this weekend for a three-game series against Baylor. The Cyclones and Lady Bears open the series on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Getterman Stadium.
