Williams opened the game with a solo home run in Iowa State’s first at-bat of the day. Williams’ first homer of the season was crushed into the berm beyond the left field fence at the Seminole Softball Complex to give ISU an early lead.
UNCG curbed the Iowa State momentum in the top of the third inning. Gabi Howard drew a lead-off walk, and Katie Stettler reached on a fielder’s choice to put runners on first and second with no outs. Later in the inning, Jasmine Palmer gave the Spartans a 2-1 lead with a two-RBI double down the left field line.
The Spartan bats stayed hot in the top of the fourth, plating two more runs on four hits and a Cyclone fielding error in the frame, extending the UNCG lead to 4-1.
The Cyclones rallied in the home half of the fifth inning, plating three runs on three hits to knot the game at 4-4. Senior Jackie Chairez was the first runner aboard, hanging in the batter’s box to be hit by a pitch, and was moved over to third on a double down the right field line by Kirsten Caudle. With one out, Williams smacked a two-RBI double to left center, scoring the duo to make it a one-run deficit. Sally Woolpert would later drop an RBI single into right field, scoring Williams from second base to tie the game.
UNCG found an answer in the ensuing inning, tallying four runs to go back ahead, 8-4. Marisa Sholtes notched a two-RBI double to left center in the inning. The Cyclones came up empty in the final two frames, falling 8-4.
