Iowa State Volleyball sweeps OU

The Cyclones were led by Jess Schaben’s 15th double-double of the season with 18 kills and 11 digs. Eleanor Holthaus marked her return from injury with 13 kills at .650 hitting, five digs and four blocks. In the back row, Izzy Enna had 16 digs, while Piper Mauck had a double-double of 41 assists and 10 digs to go with setting the Cyclone attack to a .325 hitting percentage.

First Set: Iowa State 25 Oklahoma 22
After missing the past two matches due to a concussion, Eleanor Holthaus returned with vengeance posting four kills in ISU’s first 10 points. The Cyclone defense struggled to come up with stops, as OU pushed ahead 19-14 via a 6-1 run. Holthaus’ return to the court helped spark ISU as Josie Herbst served up a 9-0 run to give ISU at 23-19 lead. The Sooners pulled back within two at 23-21 and 24-22, but the Cyclones closed it out with Holthaus’ seventh kill of the set at 25-22.

Second Set: Iowa State 25 Oklahoma 20
The Cyclones got off to a strong start, with Grace Lazard making contributions on both sides of the ball to move ahead 7-3. The ISU block made the lead five at 12-7, but Alyssa Enneking served OU onto a 4-0 run to make it a one-point set at 12-11. OU tied it back up at 16-16, but Piper Mauck’s solo stuff of Paige Anderson helped spark the visitors onto a 6-0 run to move back ahead for good. The Cyclones made it to set point at 24-19, and closed it out on Holthaus’ 10th kill of the match at 25-20.

Third Set: Iowa State 25 Oklahoma 22
Holthaus pushed a tight set into ISU’s favor, posting two-straight kills and a block with Lazard to move ISU ahead 11-9. The Cyclone advantage got to three at 13-10, but OU rallied to within one on multiple occasions. However, Iowa State was able to push ahead again by three at 17-14, but the Sooners rallied again to within one on multiple occasions. Oklahoma moved ahead at 22-21 on consecutive Morgan Miller kills, but ISU was back ahead via kills from Schaben and Herbst. Mauck set over to reach match point at 24-22, which Herbst put away with a roll shot at 25-22.

Player of the Match
Eleanor Holthaus. The freshman returned to the Cyclones after missing the past two matches with a concussion and made a huge impact. The Richmond, Minnesota native notched 13 kills at a career-high .650 hitting percentage to go with five digs and four blocks.

Iowa State has the bye this weekend and will return to Hilton Coliseum for a pair of matches on Thanksgiving week. The Cyclones will host Kansas next Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., and Texas Tech next Friday at 6:30 p.m. on Senior Night. For the Senior Night, fans are reminded to stay in their seats following the match for the Senior Night ceremony.
