Iowa State women fall at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Iowa State fell to No. 12 West Virginia 57-49 Sunday afternoon at WVU Coliseum. The loss sets the Cyclones back to 7-8 overall on the year, 1-3 in Big 12 play. The Mountaineers improve to 14-2 on the year and maintain their lead atop the Big 12 at 2-2.

How It Happened
The Cyclones survived an 8-0 Mountaineer run early and responded to knot the game at 12-12 on a Kristin Scott jumper with 7:47 to play in the half. However, Iowa State struggled offensively, scoring just four points in the second quarter. The Cyclones were plagued by a 7-of-37 shooting performance from the field in the opening 20 minutes, including 0-of-16 from beyond the 3-point arc. West Virginia closed the half on a 14-2 run to pull ahead 26-14 at the break.

West Virginia started fast following the intermission, taking its largest lead of the game at 31-16 with 7:42 to play in the third quarter. Senior Emily Durrwould lead an ISU charge, helping slice the deficit in half by the end of the stanza. Durr scored Iowa State’s next seven points, including the first ISU 3-pointer of the day, narrowing WVU’s lead to 36-29.

Iowa State carried its momentum into the final quarter, knocking down three triples on four attempts after shooting 1-of-19 from deep in the first 30 minutes. The Cyclones closed the gap to just two at 47-49 with 2:14 to play following a trey by Carleton.

However, the Cyclones were never able to tie or take the lead, as West Virginia put the game away at the free throw line.

Players of Note
For the 11th time in 15 games, Bridget Carleton led the Cyclone scoring effort. The junior finished with 14 points along with five rebounds.

Kristin Scott, a freshman, scored six points while leading the Cyclones in rebounds (nine) and steals (three) in 23 minutes of action.
