Iowa State’s Lewis Is A Nominee For The Burlsworth Trophy

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State junior safety Braxton Lewis is a nominee for the Burlsworth Trophy, announced Tuesday by the Springdale (Ark.) Rotary Club.

The Burlsworth Trophy is given to the most outstanding collegiate football player who began his career as a walk-on and has shown outstanding performance on the field.

A native of Overland Park, Kan., Lewis has started every game this season, leading the team in interceptions (3) and ranking second in tackles (45). He also has 4.0 TFL and two pass breakups.

Lewis had a streak of an interception in three-straight games (Akron, TCU, Oklahoma State), the first Cyclone to achieve the feat since A.J. Klein did it in 2010.

He was named the Big 12’s Defensive Player of the Week after collecting seven tackles, a TFL and a key fourth-quarter interception vs. Oklahoma State.
