YORK – Johan Rodriguez (SO/Texas City, Texas) scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute to secure the Panthers 2-1 win over Sterling College. In a matchup of two evenly matched teams it came down to the final minutes for one team to come out on top.

Matheus Oliveira (SR/Resende, Brazil) got things started after Alexandre Motta(FR/Sao Paulo, Brazil) gave him a pass down the far side. Oliveira two a couple dribbles and then shot a lazer that whizzed by the Warriors’ goalkeeper for the 1-0 lead in the 27th minute. Both teams battled the rest of the first half but neither side could score.

In the second half it was the Warriors that were putting the pressure on the Panthers, but when their offense would get in the attacking third they were unable to get a shot off. That was until the 62nd minute, when their lone shot of the second half found the back of the net as Ramon Lopez took advantage of a deflection and even the game at one.

A game that looked like it might go to overtime, what would be the fifth time for York this season, took a turn for the better when Oliveira sent a long pass down the near side with less than seven minutes remaining. Rodriguez snuck by a couple defenders and then ripped a shot to the far post to seal the win.

York out shot the visitors 11-7, with an 8-1 advantage in the second half. Francisco Esteves (SO/Tomar, Portugal) was a key in goal picking up four saves.

The Panthers improve to 8-4 on the season and 4-3 in KCAC play. York will host Bethel College on Saturday afternoon with a kickoff set for 3:30 p.m.
