Midland Volleyball earns sweep of Morningside

Ninth-ranked Midland turned back No. 24 Morningside 25-21, 25-15, 25-22 in a GPAC volleyball showdown between nationally ranked teams on Tuesday in Fremont, Neb.

The Mustangs dropped to 0-2 in the GPAC standings after a demanding start to their league schedule that put them on the road for matches at Midland and No. 5 Dordt.

Morningside, 7-7 overall, hopes to break into the league victory column when it hosts Mount Marty for its home opener on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The Mustangs were limited to a .097 hitting percentage against Midland. Emma Gerber led the Mustangs with 10 kills, followed by Jayde Bergmann with six kills and Krista Zenk with five.

Nikki Oberfoell led the guests with 16 digs and had one of the team’s two ace serves. Merrin Van Velzen had the other ace.

Callie Alberico contributed 10 digs to the Mustangs’ court coverage to go along with 12 assists. Kylee Chavez led the Mustangs with 13 assists.
