BELLEVUE, Neb. – No. 11 Midland University volleyball had a much better showing at the GoSarpy.com Labor Day Classic on Saturday morning than they did the night before as they swept No. 23 Ottawa University (25-19, 25-19, 25-19). The Warriors improve to 8-2 as they complete their non-conference schedule while the Braves fall to 4-3.

“I really like how our team responded against a nationally ranked team after last night’s disappointing play,” commented head coach Paul Giesselmann. “I thought our serving and passing was much better today, which allowed our offense to be much more efficient.”

Efficient was somewhat of an understatement for the Warriors in the second set. They dominated the set with a .519 attacking percentage, flooring 15 balls against just one error. That set carried the team to a .392 hitting percentage on the day.

Priscilla O’Dowd led the way with 12 kills while Jenny Bair was just shy of double figures with 9 kills of her own. The senior duo had just 3 errors in 39 swings.

Jessica Peters took advantage of better passing with 33 set assists on the day. No other Warrior was needed to set the ball as three others tallied just one set assist.

Peters also was a key player in the defensive game with 8 digs and 2 block assists. She let the team in digs, along Jaisa Russell who also recorded 8 digs.

Maggie Hiatt had just six kills on the match but aided the Warriors defensively at the net with one solo block and three assists to lead the team.

Midland (8-2) will shift in to conference play now. They’ll open up Great Plains Athletic Conference matches next week as they host (RV) Morningside (5-4) on Wednesday and Mount Marty (2-3) on Thursday night. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m. and will take place inside Wikert Event Center in Fremont, Nebraska.
