Midland wins twice in Chicago

CHICAGO – Midland Volleyball picked up a pair of wins on Friday at the first day of the SXU/TTC Crossover Tournament. In the afternoon they swept host Saint Xavier University and then after a short break they made quick work of Roosevelt University, sweeping them as well.

The Lady Warriors came out hot from the service line as Taylor Petersen served up three quick aces as Midland jumped out to a 3-0 lead. As a team the Lady Warriors would get eight past the Cougars in the match. When SXU got the chance to play the ball they were met with a stout Warrior defense. Midland had seven blocks and held the Cougars to .153% hitting. The Warriors hit .245% with 36 kills.

“Our team served very well against a quality opponent in the first match which set the tone for the day,” stated head coach Paul Giesselmann. “Defense and ball control allowed us to dominate them in the middle of the net.”

In the second match of the day Midland continued the trend of excellent serving. This time they muscled 12 serves past the Laker defense in route to as quick 64 minute match. Midland made use of their attack against the overmatched Lakers as well. In set one they hit .429 with 10 kills on just 21 attempts. Priscilla O’Dowd led the team with 11 kills while Jenny Bair and Peterson chipped in 5 each.

“It was nice to get the early lead in the second match which allowed us to rest some of our starters,” coach Giesselmann stated. “We’ve got a big match tomorrow morning against Saint Francis.”

Midland is now 3-3 on the season and have won three straight, all sweeps. They’ll have an early call on Saturday as they face the aforementioned Fighting Saint of Saint Francis at 9:00 a.m.
