Morningside Baseball’s DeChaine named All-American

Nathan DeChaine, a senior third baseman from Brainerd, Minn., was named a 2018 NAIA Baseball Honorable Mention All-American.

DeChaine, the 2018 Hauff-MidAmerica Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) Player of the Year, received honorable mention All-America honors for the third year in a row to become the only three-time NAIA All-America baseball player in Morningside history. He was also a three-time first-team All-GPAC selection. DeChaine is the Mustangs’ all-time career leader with 47 home runs and 212 RBIs and ranks second in school history with 244 career hits.

DeChaine was the Mustangs’ leading hitter this season with a team-high 59 hits in 157 at-bats for a .376 batting average to go along with a team-high 14 home runs and 49 RBIs. He was the Mustangs’ first player to lead the team in all three Triple Crown hitting categories since Jared Noteboom batted .391 with 10 home runs and 67 RBIs in 2000. DeChaine topped the GPAC in home runs and RBIs and was the league’s fourth leading hitter.

Aside from leading the Mustangs in batting average, home runs and RBIs, DeChaine also topped the team with 39 runs scored, 31 base on balls, a .726 slugging percentage and a .492 on-base percentage and ranked second on the team with 13 doubles.

DeChaine led the Mustangs with 17 multiple hit games and 14 multiple RBI games. He had a pair of 10-game hitting streaks and a streak where he reached base in 20 consecutive games. DeChaine was at his best in the clutch with team-high batting averages of .429 with runners on base and .420 with runners in scoring position.

DeChaine collected 244 hits in 680 at-bats for a .360 batting average with 52 doubles, three triples, 47 home runs and 212 RBIs during his Morningside career.

Morningside posted a 22-25-1 record during the 2018 season and finished fifth in the GPAC standings with a 14-12 league mark.
