Morningside Softball sweeps Doubleheader from Dordt

Morningside Softball sweeps Doubleheader from Dordt

SIOUX CENTER, IOWA – Whether by offense, defense or from the circle, Morningside College has seen its share of diamond success this season.

Monday, April 15, at Dordt College was no different.

Battling to remain atop the Great Plains Athletic Conference standings, head coach Jessica Jones-Sitzmann‘s crew took a little bit from all three areas to turn back a gritty Defenders team on its home field.

Senior pitcher Hallie Misiaszek (SR/Mitchell, SD) (Mitchell, S.D.), who’s been on an epic roll of late, fired a complete-game three-hit shutout in the opener replete with four strikeouts and came back in game two with her seventh straight complete game and ninth consecutive win by working through seven hits and stranding eight base runners. Offensively, the quartet of sophomore Carson Cameron (SO/Herman, NE) (Herman, Neb.), sophomore Lexie Stolen (SO/Sioux City, IA) (Sioux City, Iowa), junior Mackenzie Lose (JR/Indianola, IA) (Indianola, Iowa) and senior Rebecca Riley (SR/Gothenburg, NE) (Gothenburg, Iowa) each tallied two hits, and freshman McKenna Becker (FR/Elkhorn, NE) (Elkhorn, Neb.) drove in a run in game one, while Lose came back with two hits and a run driven in, and freshman Josie Baxter (FR/Lincoln, NE) (Lincoln, Neb.) doubled in game two. The highlight of the defensive component arrived in the form of a game-ending sparkler where freshman Ellie Cropley (FR/Sioux City, IA) (Sioux City, Iowa) nabbed DC’s Hailey Heeringa at first on a bang-bang play to close the twin bill, as the home team attempted to send the tying runs scooting across home plate.

Moving its win streak to 12 in a row and gaining a two-game lead on the loop standings in the win column, Mside added another 20-wins-or-more campaign to its tradition-rich program, improving to 21-6 overall and 14-2 in the conference. A clash between the top two loop teams is next on the schedule, as Jones-Sitzmann’s squad travels to Fremont, Neb., for a showdown with National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ top-20 ranked Midland University Thursday, April 18. First pitch is 3 p.m.
