Morningside went 0-2 on Friday at the Northwestern Red Raider Classic volleyball tournament in Orange City, Iowa, with a pair of losses against nationally ranked opponents.
The Mustangs opened the day with a 25-22, 25-19, 19-25, 24-26, 15-8 setback against ninth-ranked Corban before they dropped a 25-14, 25-22, 25-22 verdict against No. 18 MidAmerica Nazarene.
The two setbacks leveled the Mustangs’ record at 3-3 heading into Saturday contests against Dakota State and Mayville State.
The contest against Corban was a rematch of the Mustangs’ 2016 season finale when they dropped a 3-1 verdict in pool play at the NAIA National Championship.
The Mustangs will face another nationally ranked team later tonight with a contest against No. 18 MidAmerica Nazarene in a match scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Morningside will take a 3-2 record into the contest.
Jayde Bergmann pounded a match-high 15 kills to pace the Mustangs’ attack against Corban. Brittni Olson joined her in double figures with 13 kills, while Emma Gerber and Jenn Buyert just missed with nine kills each.
Callie Alberico gave the Mustangs a big performance with a match-high 41 assists and a team-high 17 digs. She also provided two of the Mustangs’ seven ace serves.
Mustang freshman Reagan TeKolste had three ace serve to lead all performers.
Aside from Alberico’s 17 digs, the Mustangs’ also received double figure dig efforts from Nikki Oberfoell with 16 and Morgan Gourley with 11.
Bergmann had six block assists and Olson provided one solo block and four block assists.
Bergmann led the Mustangs with 12 kills against MidAmerica Nazarene. Alberico and Buyert each had five kills, followed by Gerger, Olson and Brittany Fleming, all with four.
Alberico dealt 25 assists.
Gourley paced the Mustangs with nine digs, followed by Oberfoell with eight and Alberico with seven.
Olson had three block assists and Bergmann had one solo block and two block assists.
