Morningside’s volleyball team wrapped up a successful two-match home stand with a 25-14, 25-22, 17-25, 25-12 victory against Dakota State on Friday in the Rosen Verdoorn Sports Center.
The Mustangs, ranked 24th nationally, were coming off a 3-0 sweep against Mount Marty in Thursday’s GPAC opener. The two victories improved the Mustangs record to 9-7.
The Mustangs received career performances from Jayde Bergmann and Callie Alberico in the triumph against Dakota State. Bergmann hammered a career-high 19 kills to pace the Mustangs’ attack, while Alberico had career highs of 23 digs and four ace serves to go along with 48 assists. Bergmann finished with a .429 hitting percentage.
Two other Morningside attackers joined Bergmann in double figures. Krista Zenk slammed 11 kills and led the Mustangs with a .556 hitting percentage, while Emma Gerber had 11 kills and a .381 hitting percentage.
Brittni Olson just missed double figures with nine kills and a .368 hitting percentage.
Aside from Alberico’s match-high 23 digs, the Mustangs also received double figure efforts by Nikki Oberfoell with 12 digs and Merrin Van Velzen with 10, followed by Morgan Gourley with eight digs. Oberfoell reached double figures for the 10th match in a row.
Gerber led the Mustangs’ blocking effort with three block assists.
Morningside will face city rival Briar Cliff on Tuesday at 7:30 at Briar Cliff.
