Morningside’s Borchers named GPAC Player of the Week

SIOUX CITY, IOWA – Morningside College junior forward/center Tyler Borchers (JR/Le Mars, IA ) (LeMars, IA) has been named the Great Plains Athletic Conference/Hauff Mid-America Sports men’s basketball Player of the Week for the period of Jan. 21-27.

Borchers turned in a memorable two-game span last week as the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ Division II third-ranked team upped its win streak to six with victories over Hastings College and Dakota Wesleyan University. Moving into the program’s top 20 all-time in scoring (1,205 points – No. 18), he averaged 17.5 points and 12 rebounds a game to help guide the Mustangs to the 20-win mark for the third season in a row. Borchers’ numbers were impressive around the court, as he hit 72.7 percent from the field and also averaged three assists, a steal and a half and a blocked shot per outing.

His biggest game of the set occurred Jan. 26 during an 87-72 decision over Dakota Wesleyan which avenged Morningside’s lone loss of the year. The junior registered 22 points and 15 rebounds for his second double-double in his last five appearances. Borchers goes into the week ranked second in Division II in field goal percentage at 70.9 percent.

Morningside starts a brief two-game road trip with a visit to Midland University’s Wikert Event Center in Fremont, Neb., Wednesday, Jan. 30. Tip-off is 8 p.m.
