Listen to the game here.

WACO – Touchdowns, penalties, and scoring, oh my! That pretty much sums up Friday nights game in Waco, between the Nebraska Lutheran Knights, and the Thayer Central Titans.

Neither team had won a game coming to the night. Nebraska Lutheran was 0-2 and Thayer Central coming off a bye week was 0-1.

And the as the movie title goes, “Remember the Titans.”

And remember them they did as these two teams met up last year when Nebraska Lutheran knocked Thayer Central out of the playoffs last season, then eventually lost to the what would be the state champion.

Same result Friday night as Thayer Central lost 42-14.

Nebraska Lutheran came into the 2018 campaign losing all of their 2017 offensive starters to graduation, and only retaining two defensive starters.

Thayer central however was loaded with five returning starters on offense and five on defense.

On paper, Thayer Central should win the game, but games aren’t played on paper.

The scoring started right away for Nebraska Lutheran as they got great field position on the kick off. The Knights had the first down when a Thayer Central player jumped off sides, two consecutive turns. Next play Dillon Malcow ran it in from 5 years out for his first of three TD’s on the night. Two plays, and the Knights were on the board already.

That was just the beginning of the penalties for the Titans. They had six flags in the first half of the game, allowing the Knights to capitalize on all their gifted opportunities.

The Titans ended with nine penalties in the whole game.

Next time Nebraska Lutheran got the ball they again gave the rock to Malcow, this time he found an opening and 38 yards for the touchdown. Sam Otte followed immediately with the two point conversation.

Thayer Central then switched their formation and went to the shotgun and ran the ball down the field eventually scoring on a five yard run to Isaiah Keilwitz for his first and only score of the night.

Suddenly, it looked more like an equal match up.

At half time it was 16-8 in favor of the Nebraska Lutheran Knights.

Third quarter was all about the Knights, as they used the power run with Malcow leading the charge.

Brian Seaberg ran in a T.D. in the third.

Thayer Central had a couple missed opportunities in the third quarter to make some noise but dropped some passes in the open field to continue to hurt their own cause.

The fourth quarter started and Malco took the kickoff 60 yards for his third and final T.D, of the night.

Thayer Central’s Zach Koss did score on a T.D. in the fourth, but it was too little, too late.

Most of the fourth quarter was occupied by the back-up players on both squads as the game was out of hand by then.

Nebraska Lutheran earned their first “W” of the season and became 1-2. Thayer Central moved to 0-2.
