BROOKINGS, S.D. – Omaha baseball dropped the final two games of the series at South Dakota State to fall to 14-28 overall and 9-12 in league play, while the Jackrabbits improve to 15-24 and 13-8 in The Summit League to claim second place in the standings.
The Mavericks fell 14-4 in the second game and 8-6 in the series finale to SDSU.
Omaha 4, South Dakota State 14
After falling on a walk-off home run in the first game (5-4) the Mavericks dropped game two. Due to inclement weather, play was suspended in the bottom of the seventh inning and resumed Sunday (May 6), as the Omaha baseball team trailed at South Dakota State 13-4.
Omaha fell into a 4-0 hole after the Jackrabbits scored one run in the second off a single RBI and a three-run homer in the third. The Mavericks cut the deficit to three after Braden Rogers singled to score Hunter Hughes from second.
Back-to-back Jackrabbit homers along with a single RBI brought six more runs for South Dakota State, which made the score 10-1 at the end of the fourth.
Max Gamm was able to single for an RBI to score Thomas DeBonville in the top of the fifth. With the bases loaded in top of the sixth, the Mavericks scored two more runs off a walk and a sacrifice fly from Gamm to make it 10-4.
South Dakota State scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 11-4, and the lead increased to 13-4 in the bottom of the seventh off a two-run homer.
In the bottom of the seventh on Sunday, South Dakota State picked up the win and its 14th run after scoring on a passed ball.
Omaha 6, South Dakota State 8
With four lead changes throughout the game, South Dakota State edged Omaha 8-6 with four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Max Gamm doubled to left for an RBI in the top of the fifth. Two more Maverick runs came in the top of the sixth, when Grant Suponchick and Tyler Daugherty both singled for a pair of RBI to put Omaha up 3-0.
South Dakota State tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run RBI off a double, followed by a fielder’s choice that brought home the runner from third. A sacrifice fly in the bottom seventh put the Jackrabbits up 4-3.
Omaha rallied off three runs with the bases loaded to take a 6-4 lead in the top of the eighth. Hunter Hughes scored from third off a SDSU error, followed by a pair of RBI singles from Thomas DeBonville and Keil Krumwiede.
SDSU, however, was able to respond in the bottom of the eighth. The Jackrabbits scored four runs off a single, a hit by pitch, and another single that brought home two runs to take an 8-6 lead. The Mavericks showed life in the bottom of the ninth when Ben Palensky singled to get on base, but the Jackrabbits were able to close out the game and leave him on base. SDSU’s Alex Marro earned the win (1-1) while Jake Pennington falls to 2-7 with one walk through 0.1 innings pitched. Starter Andrew Brighton totaled two walks and a strikeout through 5.1 innings.
DeBonville went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a triple, while Suponchick finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Gamm went 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.
Omaha takes on in-city rival Creighton at Werner Park Wednesday (May 9) at 7:05 p.m., followed by a three-game Summit League road series at Oral Roberts May 11-13.
